it's a loaded thought, that loss. she can equate it to many moving pieces - sootopolis's half-victory, kyogre's frenzy, declan walsh 's face still swimming in the shadows of her home, Shred 's weapon cleaving through her side, petalburg and its own bloody losses.

each one carries a heavy weight. the league feels less and less like hallowed ground. pristine walls have a stain to them now and no amount of scrubbing will rid them of the war's splatter.

[break][break]but annalise is fire and despair and more fire — as MATIAS SILPH put it, at least — so eventually, in the dark of this self-pitying pit, a match is lit against the striker of illeana's fanaticism. her words remind her of what she already knows: there is no recourse except to dust themselves off and keep fighting.[break][break]"you're right. we won't." on this, she agrees. whatever illeana's meaning, annalise filters her own from its muddied nuance.[break][break]mew floats over to join them, satisfied with its tour of the laboratory. its keen eyes shift between them, curious about the conversation. while they still recover from war, mew seems to have shed the dragonscales and gravitas of sootopolis as soon as the ceasefire was drawn.[break][break]annalise looks up at mew, unvoiced questions passing behind her eyes like fish behind aquarium glass. she takes a breath, shallower than usual, and pivots to a silver lining. "i didn't know it could do all that. i — i don't really know much about mew at all, actually."

their creator. a genesis that may or may not exist, far up in the heavens and out of their reach. mew continues to look agitated as illeana expands on her theory, ears flattened and tail swishing limply beneath it like a pendulum in motion. annalise wishes they could just ask mew the unknowns that hang in the air between them.
